My everyday style ultimately alternates between two looks: old-style “girl detective” and actual mermaid. Sometimes I fawn over vintage-inspired dresses and midi skirts, while other times I show off my island origins by wearing lots of shell and pearl jewelry. (I’m always so surprised that more Mainlanders don’t wear shell earrings!)
It’s very rare that these two looks intersect–but when a slightly colder morning inspired me to strike new territory by adding a navy cardigan to one of my favorite dresses, my beautiful glass jellyfish necklace seemed the perfect way of tying my various aesthetics together. After all, there’s no place on Earth that has as many mysteries as the sea!
(Important note: no, that’s not a real jellyfish! It’s crafted entirely from glass by an extremely talented artist. Can you even imagine what kind of skill that must take?)
This dress (made by Sunny Girl and purchased through my old favorite Modcloth!) has been one of the most versatile and long-lasting pieces I’ve ever added to my wardrobe. It’s seen me through my first day of work, my inexplicable yet delightful appearance in a street fashion periodical, and any number of museum tours and lectures. (A little bit of color correction even transformed it into a command-gold Starfleet uniform when my college singing group had a “Spockapella” concert.)
My favorite thing about the dress, of course, is its charming Peter Pan-ish collar: which looks so adorable under cardigans or sweaters!
I jump at any excuse to wear this necklace–primarily because it makes people do double-takes like nobody’s business. This fake jellyfish is really the best little cnidarium out there: no need to fear these not-so-stinging tentacles! When not hanging around my neck as a conversation starter, the glass jellyfish apparently enjoys the company of its fellow sea creatures
The overcast day really revealed my true redhead nature, even if my little pulled-back hairstyle looked a little messy after a day of meetings.
Though I’m most often spotted with my Kanken Mini these days, this dress reminded me so strongly of my oddly-geometric-foxes backpack that I couldn’t resist bringing them together! If anything, perhaps some of that stereotypical vulpine cleverness will come my way with the help of this ensemble…
