Outfit of the (Yester)day: Shark in the Water

I have heart-shaped sunglasses and a dress that combines a Peter Pan collar with an adorable shark print, and I’m finally back home in Hawai’i. How much better could December get?

As soon as I woke up this morning–with tree ferns and misty forests outside my window and the sounds of native birds creeping in through the ceiling–I knew that I would have to celebrate the warm weather by wearing my new shark dress for the first time.

(Considering that I’m now on a small island surrounded by the Pacific, I’d say it’s pretty thematically relevant.)

I love sharks, you guys. They are fascinating sea creatures who, to be honest, aren’t doing so well at the moment–countless species of sharks are classified as “vulnerable” threatened species, and several are on the endangered list.

That said, there is something incredibly appealing about pairing images of these marine carnivores with a lacy crocheted collar and a skater dress. At the very least, I can use it as an excuse to serve as a shark ambassador: telling anyone who comments on my dress about the dangers sharks face from overfishing today!

It would have been still more fitting if we had gone to the beach today, but my Hawai’i home base lies in the mountains and forests: I grew up living at several thousand feet above sea level. This canopy of trees covers one of my favorite little hikes (and one which may play background to several upcoming outfit posts…).

What’s the quirkiest or strangest print design you’ve ever encountered? Do you enjoy showing off your nerdy interests through your style choices?
